Culinary Meliorism Garden Party

An evening of nourishing hearts with sweetness, poetry, nature, and believing in the goodness and kindness that exists in humankind

Time & Location

Jun 27, 2026, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Inner Wolf Retreat Space, 2854 Puncheon Fork Rd, Mars Hill, NC 28754, USA

About the event

An evening of seasonal, honey-infused food, poetry, and presence. Gather around the garden table as each course is paired with a live poetry reading, inviting us to slow down, savor, and reconnect with beauty, nature, and one another.

A five course garden supper with poetry pairings with each course. Meliorism is believing in the goodness and kindness that exists in people. Poet Jon Meliferas will serve up a tasty, uplifting poem with each course. As beekeepers, Dawn and Michael of Inner Wolf Retreat Space feature local honey in each dinner course.

The location for the supper in the field will be in the shade by around 6pm and alongside the river. Bring friends and meet new ones at this community oriented event. The more we celebrate goodness and kindness in the world, we find more of the same in the world.

Meliorism (pronounced MEE-lee-uh-riz-um) is the philosophical belief that the world is not automatically destined to get better, but that humanity can actively improve the quality of life through deliberate effort, reason, and positive action.

Key Concept Breakdown

  • The Root: The word derives from the Latin word melior, meaning "better".

  • The Middle Ground: It sits perfectly between two extremes: optimism (the belief that the world is perfectly good or will naturally improve on its own) and pessimism (the belief that the world is bad and cannot be fixed).

  • Active Agency: Unlike optimism, meliorism doesn't view progress as guaranteed. Instead, it asserts that while suffering and imperfection exist, humanity has the agency to gradually improve the world
